Reynard fights Isegrim, from the Roman de Renart, 1275–1300, France.
The wolf Isegrim was the arch-nemesis of Reynard the Fox. The two often engaged in battles of wits or arms, but Reynard always had the better of Isegrim.
The tales of Reynard and his mischief were highly popular in medieval times. Their popularity was so great that renard became the new word for 'fox' in French, replacing the Old French term goupil
