A fox with a flute from the Breviary of Mary of Savoy, Italy (Lombardy), ca. 1430. The fox was a popular and recurring figure in medieval tales. Sometimes it played the role of a cunning underdog outsmarting its enemies, and sometimes a sly villain tricking a gullible victim. The most famous of these tales were the stories of Reynard the Fox, which were so popular that renard became the new word for fox in French, replacing the Old French word goupil.
