A fox trying to trick some birds from the Maastricht Hours, Belgium, 14th century. The image depicts Reynard the Fox deceiving Chanticleer the Rooster to lower his guard, making him easier to catch. The tales of Reynard and his mischief were highly popular in medieval times. Their popularity was so great that renard became the new word for "fox" in French, replacing the Old French term goupil.
